The mission of Monocacy Creek Watershed Association (MCWA) is to protect, preserve, enhance, and restore Monocacy Creek and its watershed. MCWA partners with schools, universities, businesses and like-minded environmental organizations to achieve its mission.

The Monocacy Creek Watershed — Why it Matters

Protecting the Monocacy Watershed benefits wildlife, landowners - and you! The creek is an oasis for trout fishing, birdwatching, hiking, and picnicking.

Watersheds play a crucial role in the environment and human society, as they determine both the availability and quality of water.

  • By acting as a natural sponge, capturing, storing, and releasing water, and filtering out sediment and pollutants, and providing clean water for homes, farms, and businesses.

  • By providing clean water, rich habitats, flood control, and resilient soil by naturally filtering pollutants, stabilizing banks, and supporting biodiversity, which reduces farming costs and boosts economic activities.

  • By providing clean water and habitat, the 20+ miles of Monocacy Creek is a haven for wildlife along its length. Famous for its Class A wild brown trout, the creek also supports bald eagles, waterfowl and songbirds, alongside common mammals like deer, foxes, raccoons, rabbits, and squirrels —even while flowing through a highly populated area.

  • By providing clean water for boating and fishing and supporting diverse fish and wildlife for viewing. The creek offers beautiful natural settings with parks and trails for birdwatching, hiking, and picnicking.

Healthy watersheds filter pollutants, recharge groundwater, store water, and control flooding, which are essential for a healthy environment and human well-being.

What We Do

The Monocacy Creek Watershed Association (MCWA) helps to educate the community about the importance of watersheds, monitors the health of the creek, supports environmental study, and advocates for the creek with government authorities.

Through stream-bank restoration, tree-planting and clean-up projects, MCWA volunteers work to keep the Monocacy Watershed beautiful and healthy.
